The Grasshopper Cocktail Story...

The Grasshopper is a green blast of the past with green creme menthe, heavy cream, and creme de cacao—a beautiful minty taste. White creme de cacao is a sweet chocolate-flavored liqueur with a buttery mouthfeel. And, of course, the heavy cream. This combination creates a silky dessert drink that reminds you of the after-eight chocolate.

Although the drink was created in New Orleans in 1919, it wasn't popularized until the 1950s! When prohibition ended the popularity and growth of many cocktails that were born before that time skyrocketed, including the popularity of the Grasshopper cocktail.

Today's bartenders have repeatedly rewritten the recipe, creating clarified grasshoppers, milkshakes, and other fun twists on this flavorful classic.

Dale DeGroff is a New York bartending legend. He breaks the equal-parts rule and adds more heavy cream to complete the drink, as seen in this recipe.

Although the Grasshopper is excellent any time of the day, its sweet and creamy flavor makes it a good choice after dinner.
