The Blood & Sand Cocktail Story...

Blood & Sand, a classic scotch-based cocktail. The original recipe was published in 1930 by Harry Craddock in "The Savoy Cocktail Book." It has been a staple on bar menus ever since. Is it possible that Craddock invented it or just put it in his book? Nobody knows.

If no one knows who the drink's creator is or the original location, then what do we know about the drink? Its name comes from Rudolph Valentino's silent-film star, "The Latin Lover," who starred in a 1922 bullfighter film.

Valentino's performance on "Blood and Sand" was about a bullfighter and was based upon the novel by Vincente Blasco Ibanez. It is said to be one of his finest performances. However, the picture itself wasn't anything special. A reviewer of the film at the time stated that "Blood and Sand" were not about the plot or story, but the story's name. This is not true for the cocktail.

A smooth, not too sweet scotch and freshly squeezed orange juice are the keys to this cocktail.
